I imagine 99% of their business is done over the phone with restaurant corporations and for some tax reason.

Every Nordstrom store my mom ever drug me to has always been the nicest looking mall store I have ever gone into. Super nice, zero sales signs, and the employees are dressed to the nines. The one you showed looked horrible. I do regular nordstrom rack as its the same as a Marshalls just with nicer business attire options.

Tried to buy some living room furniture a few years back from big lots, but they don't deliver and nothing on their website was actually in stock. They had display models in the store, but I couldn't actually buy anything. And I tried several sets of furniture. It was odd, like they were pretending to sell furniture 🤔🤷

i recently discovered your channel and it brings me so much joy. i am an 80s kid, so the malls and department stores push a lot of nostalgia buttons without having to deal with traffic and parking. the music is great too. thank you so much!

I love Dillard’s. They’re so classy. I like their brand name clothing, especially as been buying more professional clothing for work. It’s stylish and they always have clearance sales at the end of the season.

I’m from AZ. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in ‘99 and on the weekend we would take a bus down to San Diego to hang out. This was one of the destinations. My first taste of Panda Express (I saw it was still there in the distance at the food court). That was before it got as big as it is now. Back then, never heard of Panda Express in AZ.

Should’ve gone into Tucson Toys and Gadgets. There is a hidden tavern in the back call Short Rest Tavern and it’s a super fun addition. I grew up going to this mall and I can still remember what it looked like before 2003 and I’ve actually never stood back and realized how 80s this mall actually is. Can’t Buy Me Love is one of my favorite 80s movies because not only was it filmed in Tucson, but at my high school as well. The mall. The airplane graveyard and other locations around 1980s Tucson. Also yes, $18 for a burger and fries killed me too.

Sort of necro'ing this thread, as it were, but Foothills Mall was recently literally buried (well, bulldozed) and is being resurrected from the dead as this big gentrification project featuring luxury apartments and boutique shops. The only things left of the original mall are the movie theater, the Barnes and Noble, and a cowboy bar. Everything else has been flattened for the new development. The neighborhood is still sketchy though, so I'm watching to see if the gentrification spreads or if it de-gentrifies in a year....

Walgreens corporate has been out of touch with their retail customers for years and now it appears they are out of touch with reality, too. Interactive video cooler doors are just one example of the fiscal waste responsible for exorbitant $10 greeting cards (they're made of paper!) and overpriced batteries, memory sticks, and pretty much everything else in Walgreens. 😢

You weren't lying about the "Backrooms" feel, lol. Even that flickering ceiling light towards the back in one of the shots! I had no idea that restaurant supply shops were open to the public, or had such useful items sometimes. Might have to go check in to my local one at some point!

I can honestly say that there is a wide variance in locations for example the Jcpenney store in my area still is connected to a large mall built in the 70s and both still getting heavy foot traffic even now in summer 2024.

Even as a child of the 70's, I have never been inside a single Dillard's as we never had them in Northern Indiana. Glad to see a Sears like store still in business and if I had one in my area, I would def give it business as I am not liking Amazon anymore.

The main reason I stopped shopping at Walgreens is because they only schedule 1 pharmacist and 1 tech to handle a line 10 deep. And their prices even compared with CVS are just astronomically high, I only shop at Wags when it's 2AM and I desperately need OTC medicine, and even then I DoorDash it so I don't have to deal with the crackheads and quirky employees.

Thanks for documenting these. I’m interested in this bygone era. I remember as a kid visiting different malls throughout the Phoenix Valley. A lot of them don’t exist anymore. Like, now as an adult, I drive trying to find these places but they’ve been completely torn down or converted into something else.

I was passing by on the freeway few years ago, before the pandemic. I thought, why not check the old place out? Then there was random stores open here and there. The place was definitely on its way out. I just remember the place was hopping when I was a kid. I’ll always remember Kay Bee’s toy store and shopping at Christmas time.😌

It really bothers me when people leave their nasty drinks and food littered around. I miss when stores disallowed open food and drink. It's akin to people lounging on the furniture meant to be bought, treating it like waiting room furniture (ala Marshalls or Home Goods). And it's always men and kids. You know their clothes aren't sanitary. All these people are partly to blame for the downing of our public spaces.

That place doesn't look nothing like it did when I was growing up in Phoenix. The best thing I recall were lots of different little restaurants that were walk up and order and situated around a large open eating area. All of it indoors.

Last time I was in a Walgreens, was in Florida about 10 years ago. It looks the same today… which is part of the problem. I said the same thing about Kmart when they closed, where it felt like a time warp to a decade prior.

My local Macy's is actually pretty well stocked and busy, and the mall has a lot of people walking around in it too. It's not a super fancy place, but maintained well. In contrast, the mall that's in the next town over is rather sad looking and has a boarded-up Sears at one end.

I'm not super surprised you glossed it over, but I would've really liked to have seen the cosmetic section. I was a beauty consultant for Walgreens for several years, and beauty was one of the few retail categories the company was really interested in investing in. I wonder what the beauty department looks like in the store that had all the LED doors. The times I've visited the Walgreens where I used to work, all the perfumes at the fragrance counter were clearanced and they'd introduced a couple of new makeup brands but not much else. (Drugstore makeup is actually better than it's ever been, but makeup isn't the beauty industry golden goose now; it's skincare. And in skincare it really looks like the company hasn't been keeping up, even though that was where a ton of the focus was when I worked there.)

That ad you showed from 2001 has the exact dining table and chairs I grew up eating on. I was born in 2001 and had never heard of Montgomery Ward before this video, but it's strange to think that maybe my then-younger and first time homebuyer parents, a bartender and a gifted program teacher, saw and took advantage of their going-out-of-business sales to get a dining set for the family they would one day have after I and my younger brother were born.

The Macy's nearest my house is totally spooky. It was originally part of a mall that was closed and demolished about 10 years ago, the Macy's being the only part left. My buddy and I went to look around a while back and it was pretty dead, barely any workers, shelves neglected just like in the video. We went to the top floor which was, just like in the video, drab, lonely and eerie. I absolutely get that backrooms vibe. There was an employees only area we almost entered by mistake because it felt so similar to the rest of the floor, complete with its lack of any workers inside. The place hadn't been updated in decades, you could tell. We eventually got an overwhelming sense of dread and left.
